Overview
Overview
The BSc (Hons) Artificial Intelligence and Data Science degree teaches you to build systems that learn from data. You start with programming, maths and statistics, and machine learning foundations, then move on to artificial intelligence, data science and computational simulation.
In your final year you study deep learning, data visualisation and applications of AI, choose a negotiated specialism, and complete your own honours project. If you take the work placement option, you spend Year 3 working in industry before you return for your final year.

Modules
Course structure
Each year builds on the one before. Open a year to see its modules.
Year 1
- The Computing Challenge (CO1007)This module aims to provide a learning environment emphasising discovery and teamwork. You’ll learn an overview of key practical aspects of computing.
- Ethics, Data And Professionalism (CO1191)Explore fundamental concepts of working with data in intelligent systems. You’ll learn how to prepare data for use.
- Machine Learning Foundations (CO1192)Learn how data can be used for predictive modelling, with a focus on machine learning. You’ll learn how to make decisions when given incomplete or missing data.
- Maths And Statistics For AI And Data Science (CO1193)You’ll learn about the mathematical and statistical topics that underpin computer systems.
- Programming (CO1409)This module will develop your ability to analyse a simple problem with a view to implementing a software solution.
- Systems Analysis And Database Design (CO1605)Within an interactive and stimulating learning environment, you will work in teams to discuss and explore a variety of systems.
Year 2
- The Agile Professional (CO2007)This module develops project leadership skills required by computer practitioners. The module explores working in an Agile way on a course-speci c group project.
- Programming For Data (CO2190)You’ll develop your programming skills, with a focus on data manipulation and analysis. This includes different programming paradigms and when to use them.
- Artificial Intelligence (CO2192)You’ll gain an overview of artificial intelligence and its applications. This includes how to make decisions when using artificial intelligence.
- Data Science (CO2193)You’ll explore some of the principles that underpin ‘big data’ structure and management. This includes effective data collection and cleansing.
- Computational Maths And Simulation (CO2194)You’ll learn about a range of computational simulation techniques. This includes the simulation of physical systems.
- Computational Thinking (CO2412)On this module you’ll develop an understanding in using algorithms and data structures using various techniques and discrete mathematics.
Year 3: Work placement (optional)
The sandwich option adds a year in industry between Year 2 and your final year. You work alongside professionals, build confidence in the workplace and return for your final year with real experience on your CV.
Final year
- Honours Degree Project (CO3008)On this module you will research, study and produce a report based on the investigation of a problem and the development of a solution.
- Applications Of AI And Data Science (CO3190)You’ll consider the potential wider use of arti cial intelligence and data science. This will help with your career planning.
- Negotiated Specialism (CO3191)You’ll undertake self-initiated learning in an area related to your course. This will develop your independent study skills.
- Deep Learning (CO3192)You’ll learn how to train a deep learning model. You’ll explore deep learning tools and techniques by examining different use cases.
- Data Visualisation (CO3193)You’ll learn how to turn data into clear charts, dashboards and visual stories. You’ll apply the principles of good visual design and use visualisation tools to explore data and communicate your findings.
Modules are indicative and may change. Optional modules run subject to availability.
