ER1010 – Engineering Analysis
This module equips students with the mathematical toolkit essential for engineering studies. It covers core calculus, complex numbers, and matrices, alongside basic mechanics, kinematics, and kinetics. This comprehensive module empowers students to apply these mathematical concepts to solve problems and navigate future engineering and technology courses with confidence.

ER1630 – Engineering Applications
This module is to introduce computer-based analysis, programming, and data acquisition techniques for various engineering applications. The module builds upon and/or complements knowledge and skill learned from general engineering principles, engineering science and practice modules, this will introduce students to applications of engineering theory and practice within their discipline.

BM1001: Creativity, Enterprise And Scholarship
Develop key skills in scholarship, research and learning technology to aid your academic studies. Using relevant themes as a basis, you’ll develop oral, presentation, debating, academic writing and research skills. The module will equip you with a complete ‘toolkit’ of academic, personal and professional skills.

BM1007: Cultural Communication
This module will introduce aspects of national culture and cultural cohesion factors necessary for engagement in future work or business activity. You’ll explore how workplace values and traditions are influenced by national culture and differentiate between the multiple theoretical viewpoints on national culture – comparing various regions, nations and societies using existing cultural analysis tools.

BM1012 – Consumer Behavior
Develop your understanding of what influences consumer behaviour, and the importance of this knowledge in different business and marketing contexts. In this module, you’ll use your knowledge of consumer behaviour to investigate the impact of different consumption patterns in society. You’ll be exposed to contemporary examples in practice as they illustrate and evaluate theoretical aspects of consumer behaviour.

ER1730 – Electronics and Electronic Engineering Practice
This module introduces the fundamentals of electronic devices and circuits, and it also provides students with the knowledge and basic practical skills required to specify and develop simple electronic systems. Module also aims to raise students’ awareness of personal and professional development relating to employability while developing skills such as project management and communication.

ER1731 – Digital Electronics and Programmable Systems
This module offers a comprehensive introduction to both electronic circuits and programmable systems. Students will gain a solid foundation in electronics, learning about essential components and how to design and build basic circuits. Furthermore, students embark on a journey into the realm of digital electronics and microprocessors/microcontrollers. This exploration will equip the students with the knowledge of number systems, logic gates, and programming – essential skills for understanding and utilizing these powerful technologies.

CO1507 – Introduction to Networking
This module will introduce students to the fundamentals of networking and networked systems and will develop the understanding they need to investigate relevant computer network standards and protocols. Students will learn the necessary about skills to set-up and configure a Local Area Network through lab work, by handling devices and using simulators.

CO1605 – Systems Analysis and Database Design
Within an interactive and stimulating learning environment, you will work in teams to discuss and explore a variety of systems. This will develop an in-depth understanding and the practicalities of database design and implementation which you can add to your programming skillset.

EL2801 – Power Engineering
This module delves into the foundational principles that drive the world of power systems engineering. Students will solidify your knowledge of AC single-phase and three-phase circuits, explore the intricacies of DC and AC rotating machines, and gain insights into the operation of polyphase induction motors. Furthermore, students will gain a foundational understanding of electrical energy transmission and explore various high and low voltage equipment and apparatuses used in power systems.

EL2205 – Electronic System Applications
This module develops the practical and intellectual skills required to develop an electronic system, meeting a user need and taking account of technical and other requirements. It builds on the skills developed in previous modules.

EL2241 – Electronic Systems
This module aims to broaden and deepen students’ experience of problem solving, using engineering principles and concepts. To enable students to further develop their analytical and experimental skills as applied to electronic circuits and systems and to enable students to design and use circuits employed in the processing and conversion of analogue signals

EL2242 – Digital Systems
This intensive module empowers students to effectively design and implement digital systems, whether in dedicated hardware or microcontroller-based systems. Students will embark on a journey through state machines, delve into the world of Hardware Description Languages (HDLs), and explore the fascinating realm of programmable logic architectures. Furthermore, students will gain a solid understanding of digital CMOS technology, including logic circuits and devices. This exploration extends to interfacing techniques, covering topics like fan-out, noise margins, open drains, tri-states, and bus systems etc.

EL2311 – Software Development 2
This module equips students to master high-level and object-oriented programming for engineering applications. Dive into the powerful trio of C, C++, and C#, and explore the fundamental principles of software development processes and design. Gain a comprehensive understanding of programming language features, empowering students to create efficient and well-structured software solutions for real-world engineering challenges.

EL3995 – Project
In this module, students will independently tackle a real-world engineering challenge by applying the technical knowledge and skills acquired throughout your course. Under the guidance of their supervisor, students will develop essential skills in project planning, requirements analysis, project management, and technical communication. This culminating experience empowers students to integrate their learnings, showcase their abilities, and confidently take the next step in their engineering journey.

EL3996 – Engineering Professionalism
This module delves into the social and environmental dimensions of an engineering career. Students will gain an understanding of diverse engineering career paths, professional organizations, and ethical considerations in the field. The module explores the impact of technology on society and how legislation shapes engineering practices to ensure safety and environmental protection. Additionally, students will gain insights into intellectual property rights, including patents and copyrights, and explore the commercial aspects of engineering, such as marketing and business planning.

EL3813 – Power Electronics
This module provides a comprehensive foundation in this critical engineering field. Students will gain a deep understanding of core power electronic devices like diodes, thyristors, IGBTs, and MOSFETs, exploring their switching characteristics, drive circuitry, and efficiency. Additionally, the module delves into switching losses, protection techniques, and their practical applications in various power electronic systems. This knowledge equips students to effectively analyze, design, and implement solutions for real-world power conversion challenges.

EL3800 – Power Systems Operation and Control
This comprehensive module offers an in-depth exploration of both electrical power operation and control. Students will gain a solid understanding of conventional and unconventional energy sources, exploring their costs, load characteristics, and system impacts. Delve into system analysis, including network and transmission line concepts, and master the intricacies of power transfer, stability (steady-state and transient), and protection against overloads, transients, and voltage surges.

EL3250 – Microcontroller Systems
This module equips students to design and build powerful microcontroller systems. Master 32-bit microcontroller architecture, explore efficient memory management and external interfacing. Delve into I/O programming, networking, and analog-to-digital conversion. Learn to control peripheral devices, real-time clocks, and implement power-efficient strategies. By the end, students will be well-equipped to design and program real-world microcontroller systems with confidence.

EL3243 – Real-Time Embedded Systems
This exciting module equips students to design, build, program, and utilize embedded real-time systems. Gain a comprehensive understanding of real-time processing, operating systems, and core functionalities. Explore hardware and software considerations, design trade-offs, and the fundamentals of embedded real-time system design. Prepare to unlock the potential of these critical systems used in everyday applications, from autonomous vehicles and robotics to medical devices and industrial control systems.

EL3300 – Machine Intelligence
This module offers an exploration of the fascinating fields of machine intelligence and machine learning. Gain insights into knowledge representation, classification, and learning paradigms. Delve into the world of neural networks, exploring their architecture, training algorithms, and applications in areas like object recognition and robot control. Additionally, discover other bio-inspired techniques like ant colony optimization and particle swarm optimization. Entry Requirements
- Entry into Year 1 in Sri Lanka is equivalent to Year 1 in Preston and will require a 60% overall score in Sri Lanka General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) with Maths and Physics at C. GCE Advanced Level (Cambridge or Edexcel) is also acceptable. Further following entry requirements from the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) should be met.
- Minimum of 2 “C” passes and 1 “S” pass in Sri Lanka General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) in the Physical Science Stream (Combined Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry) in one and the same sitting.
- Minimum of 2 “B” passes and 1 “C” pass in GCE Advanced Level (Cambridge or Edexcel) covering Mathematics/ Further Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry in one and the same sitting.
- English should be at the standard IELTS level required (or equivalent) by the University for admission to Year 1 (Level 4) in Preston, i.e. an overall IELTS score of 6.0 or higher with no sub score below 5.5, or 65 % for the General English Subject in Sri Lanka General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level).
Note: Specific subject prerequisites may apply depending on your chosen degree pathway at Central Lancashire University.
